What is Charisma?

The core of this book is, after all, charismatic communication. And for us to have a common understanding of this word, Vanessa defines it as:

Charisma = Warmth + Competence

From a warmth perspective, we want to understand if we can trust the other person. From a competence perspective, we want to understand if we can rely on the other person.

Warmth is about building trust and connection. Think of a friend who makes you feel comfortable and understood. Think back to their genuine smiles, active listening, and empathy.

Competence is about projecting confidence and capability. Imagine a leader who inspires you with their knowledge and decisiveness. If you look closely, they demonstrate competence through clear communication, strong vocabulary, and decisive behaviour.

To be truly charismatic, we need to strike a balance between these two qualities. We want people to feel both comfortable and confident in our presence..

The Power of Nonverbal Cues

Imagine this: you’re meeting someone for the first time. Before you even exchange words, your brain is already decoding a flood of information — their posture, their facial expression, their gestures. These nonverbal cues encode a hidden language that speaks volumes about our feelings, intentions, and even our personality.

Think of it like this: your body is a billboard broadcasting your inner state. Are you leaning in, showing interest? Or are your arms crossed, signalling defensiveness? Mastering this silent language is crucial for building rapport and conveying confidence. In fact, research suggests that nonverbal cues account for a whopping 65–90% of our total communication!

And What About Verbal Cues?

Words matter, but it’s not just what you say — it’s also how you say it. Vanessa categorizes the spoken elements of charisma into three areas:

  • Verbal Cues: This is about your word choice and how you structure your sentences. The icebreaker expressions you write in an email, and the words used to say farewell to colleagues in the office have direct impact on that charismatic expression.
  • Vocal Cues: Your voice is a powerful instrument. Are you speaking with warmth and enthusiasm? Or are you monotone and lifeless? Pay attention to your tone, pace, and volume to ensure your voice signals your emotions adequately.
  • Imagery Cues: The words you choose paint pictures in your listener’s mind. Use language that evokes emotions in your listeners with metaphors and vivid language. You want your speech to resonate on a deeper level to truly connect with others.

Closing Thoughts

The cues we use throughout the day have a direct correlation to how others perceive us. Your arm position, tone of voice, choice of words, all these impact your charisma.

Lean too much into warmth and people will love to be around you, but never think of you during an emergency. Be all about results all the time and people will only think of you to get work done but not so much want your company.

Charisma surges when both warmth and competence are in balance. That’s when people both trust you, call you up on emergencies, and even look up to you.
